Quick Update!

Hey everyone! So I’ve been pretty absent from this blog for about a week now and figured I would do a quick update post and let you know what I’ve been up to.

I’ve said in a few posts recently that I’ve been in a little bit of a blogging funk.  I just chalked it up to a little bit of the winter blues and the fact that I was getting really down with school.  I could spend this whole post on how school has just drained the life out of me, but I’ll just keep it simple and say that I’ve never had a semester where I hated every single class I’m taking.  So spending all day studying for subjects that I really dislike has made the last 4 months really unbearable.

Anyways, I’ve always turned to my blog to cheer me up but I haven’t found the energy to blog at all.  I had every intention of using my spring break from school to get back into the swing of things but I found that other parts of my life kept getting in the way.

I just spent the last 5 days on a mini vacation down in South Carolina and feel slightly rejuvenated.  Me and my boyfriend went down for his cousin’s wedding and we took an extra day off to explore Charleston, since we’re thinking about moving south once I’m done with law school.  Getting a little sunshine in my life made the biggest difference in my mood, and I think I’m ready to tackle the rest of the semester, as well as my blog and YouTube channel.

So I’m sorry for the lack of posts but I have a ton of posts to come! And look forward to seeing some changes to my blog, as I’m trying to make this look a little bit more professional.  Thanks for sticking with me!

Welcome to another edition of  manicure spam! I haven’t done one of these since the holidays! That is way too long because I love this type of post.  For all of you who are new to my blog, I used to try to post about once a month a Monday Manicure Spam because I really like alliteration.

One problem with blogging about nail polish is that I don’t like to show the same manicure twice, or review a polish multiple times.   But I am also a girl who likes to wear nail polish.  I don’t buy nail polish just to wear it once, write about it and then move on to the next one.  I buy polish to wear it!  Since I try to blog almost every day, and I don’t really get sent any type of polish for free, being a polish-repeater is a necessity and this is an easy way not to bore you guys with the same ol’ stuff every day!

Here are pictures of some manicures that I’ve been really enjoying over the last few weeks! If you want to read about the individual polishes used in each manicure, just click on the name below the picture and it will take you to my original post.  And yes, I do change my nail polish almost every day! Hope you enjoy this manicure spam!

Hope you enjoy this Monday Manicure Spam!

Which manicure is your favorite?? What manicures are you loving at the moment? And stay tuned for another edition coming up!

Hello my Beauties!

Every time i come across a really great product in general, i think - this could be something i should post about.
Somehow this was the inspiration for me to start doing featured blog posts, to give my fellow beauty bloggers the chance to talk about their favorite beauty items, that they consider a must-have. I think we all can benefit from it, as we discover new exciting products to try.

About a week and a half ago, the lovely and talented Luchessa asked me to write a post about my favorite hair care product. She asked several other bloggers and the result was an amazing post, and 1 or 2 things added to my wish list. She's graciously allowing me to share this post with all of you guys as well, and if you read down to the bottom she has a very generous surprise! Check out Luchessa's blog because shes amazing!

I saw this a few days ago on Luchessa’s blog and immediately was drawn in! I periodically do tags on this blog as a way for you guys to get to know me a little better.  Well, if there’s one thing about me that I can share with you it is my freakish obsession with coffee.  So I figured I would start today off with a fun and light post about one of my favorite things besides nail polish!

2image source: spotcoffee.com

1) How many cups of coffee per day? At least 2.  My boyfriend and I have a standing arrangement that we brew a pot of coffee every morning and he gets 1 cup and I get the other 2.  Needless to say our coffee cups hold more than the standard 8 oz.  On top of the standard 2 cups I sometimes will brew a pot later or stop at a coffee shop during the day.  I drink a lot of coffee!

2) What is your favorite caffeine delivery system?  Either my own coffee pot or Starbucks.  We don’t have any other coffee chain restaurants here besides Starbucks.

3) What was your best cup of coffee? My taste in coffee has changed considerably over the years.  If you would have asked me this 5 years ago, I would have said it was a cup of coffee I had in Rome (the Italians are masters at making coffee).  Prior to that I would have said the best cup of coffee is an Iced Caramel Mochiato from Starbucks.  Now, I would say the best cup of coffee is one that I can make myself, at home, with my simple coffee maker.  I know the exact strength I like, the brand I like and the temperature.

4) What was your worst cup of coffee? The worst is by far the coffee they serve at my school! On Mondays and Thursdays, the law library gives free coffee to students.  They make about 10 gallons at once and keep it in a huge brew container.  It tastes like the smelliest ash tray filled with unfiltered cigarettes and weed that is mixed with dirt.  They put out non-diary creamer and sugar to make it better.  Although I don’t like cream and sugar in my coffee, I put it in there to make it bearable to drink, only because its free coffee!

5) What does your favorite mug say? My favorite mug is one that my mom made me.  Last year my boyfriend broke my favorite mug in the world last year while doing dishes.  It said “Zombie Brew” on the outside and could hold half a pot of coffee.  So my mom, who has her own etsy shop for ceramics, made me a huge, bright red coffee mug. Its that much more special because she made it for me.

6) How do you take your coffee? Black.  But I do LOVE flavored coffee as well, but it has to be flavored beans rather than adding a syrup because that makes it too sweet.

7) When was your first cup? A long ass time ago. I remember my mom used to take me to school and stop at Arabica on the way.  She also used to let me have sips of hers.  Sometime in there I had my first cup. Then when I was in middle school a Starbucks opened in my little suburb and that was the hang out place for pretty much everyone in town.

8) Have you ever gone on a coffee date? Yep many times.  Actually my boyfriend and I had MANY when we were first dating because hes more addicted to Starbucks than me.  I’m more addicted to coffee because I’m an equal opportunity coffee drinker (i.e. I’ll drink it all), but he is snobby and will only drink Starbucks.

Now you guys have a little peek into the insanity that is my obsession with coffee! I tag anyone and everyone who wants to do this! And if you do, please let me know so I can see a fellow coffee addicts answers as well! Thanks Luchessa for introducing me to this quiz!

Have a great day everyone!

Happy New Years Eve everyone, depending on where you are in the world! This post is going to be a little different for me, as this won’t be a post about nail polish or makeup.  I guess this is just a little recap of 2012 and my hopes for 2013.

2012 was a strange but somewhat great year for me.  I started off the year in Ireland, which to me is really symbolic to go back and see where my family originates, where mother and grandfather come from.  After I came back from Ireland, I did some major soul searching and came up with 2 New Years resolutions:

  1. Blog every single day of 2012
  2. Lose weight (isn’t that every females New Years resolution?)

I’m happy to announce that I did 345 blog posts and soon to be 346 after this in 2012.  So that isn’t quite 366 posts that I wanted, since 2012 was a leap year, but being only 20 posts off isn’t bad and I’ll say that is a resolution accomplished.  I’m also half happy to announce that I lose 25 pounds in 2012 just by changing up my diet.  I think I probably gained half of that back from the holidays, but every accomplishment is something to celebrate.

Also in 2012 I finished my first year of law school, which is an accomplishment in itself since the drop-out/kick-out rate at my school was roughly more than 10%.  In my particular section, we started with 50 and are now down to 44 and some of those 44 dropped down to part time.  I also got my first real time internship in 2012, tried out and made my schools law review, and ended my first year of school with acceptable GPA.

In the fall of 2012 I started my second year of law school and went through the hardest semester of my life.  I haven’t gotten my grades back to see how well I did, but just finishing it was an accomplishment in itself.  And being able to blog and make videos for my YouTube channel on a consistent basis while I was going through academic hell is still surprising to me.

In terms of my online life, I went from around 200 subscribers on my YouTube channel to almost 2000.  That may not seem like a lot to some people, especially compared to MissGlamourazzi and Fowler sisters, but that is more than I ever thought I would get! I still love doing it as much as I did when I first started almost a year and a half ago and probably even more now.  On my blog, I went from 0 followers (or at least I think) to some number that I still can’t figure out (who knows how to figure out how many followers you have? does it go by email followers, wordpress followers, bloglovin followers, or a weird combo of the 3?).

Anyways, my online life is probably my biggest accomplishment so I want to say THANK YOU! Even if no one reads this long ass message, thank you for all of you who comment, who like my posts and those who visit! It means more than you know because if I didn’t have those who support me, I wouldn’t be doing this at all.

I have a few goals for 2013, and after having a good year in 2012 I’m hoping that I haven’t done anything to mess up my karma for 2013.  I’m always superstitious that you can’t have a great year and then another great year but instead the universe gives and takes.  But hopefully 2013 will be just as good if not better! So here are some of my goals:

  1. Lose another 40-50 pounds (depending on how my body looks or how I feel)
  2. Blog every day (or almost! as close to every day as I can)
  3. Turn my free blog into a .com and learn more about the whole blogging “thing”
  4. Reach 10,000 subscribers on YouTube (this one might be lofty, but here’s to hoping!)
  5. Move out of my loft apartment into a bigger place, perhaps one with my own mani-cave (name totally stolen from Work/Play/Polish!)
  6. Combine my YouTube and Blog more. Right now I’m blogging and posting videos and when I remember I post a video on here.  I really want to start messing the two together, because it seems like I’m working hard on each and there’s a big disconnect.  I see in the comments of my videos that people didn’t know I had a blog that I worked on every day, and people on my blog didn’t know I made videos as well.  I actually started making videos before I started my blog and this blog was supposed to be an extension of my videos.  Now, I have more hits on my blog than YouTube channel! So I want to try to combine the two more effectively.
  7. Get a legal job!

That is a lot! But those are my real resolutions, and are half about my “real” life and half about my online life.  I can’t wait to talk to you guys in 2013 and can’t thank you enough for an awesome 2012.  I wish you guys all the best and hope you have a great New Year!

What are your resolutions for 2013?

Blog of the Year Award banner 600

Although I have “technically” been blogging for more than just one year, it wasn’t until last January that I really began to take blogging seriously.  I created my blog a year and a half ago but sporadically posted and my pictures and posts were pretty crappy.  I made it my New Years resolution to blog every day for an entire year and I’m happy to announce that I pretty much accomplished my goal.

And in the last year I’ve discovered a lot about myself as well as discovered a lot of other blogs.  I’ve met many girls who I admire for their creativity and some I’m happy to say have become my friends.  I’m getting a little sappy, but this time of the year kind of does that to some people.

I was so honored when I was nominated for the Blog of the Year Award by ThePolishAlcoholic! For any of you who haven’t checked her out, her blog is amazing and I’m insanely jealous of her nails!  I’m honored and humbled to be nominated at all, but I think this is a really cool concept!

6-stars-image

The Rules:

1 Select the blog(s) you think deserve the ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Award

2 Write a blog post and tell us about the blog(s) you have chosen – there’s no minimum or maximum number of blogs required – and ‘present’ them with their award.

3 Please include a link back to this page ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Awardand include these ‘rules’ in your post (please don’t alter the rules or the badges!)

4 Let the blog(s) you have chosen know that you have given them this award and share the ‘rules’ with them

5 You can now also join our Facebook group – click ‘like’ on this page ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Award Facebook group and then you can share your blog with an even wider audience

6 As a winner of the award – please add a link back to the blog that presented you with the award – and then proudly display the award on your blog … and start collecting stars…

Yes – that’s right – there are stars to collect!

Unlike other awards which you can only add to your blog once – this award is different!

When you begin you will receive the ‘1 star’ award – and every time you are given the award by another blog – you can add another star!

There are a total of 6 stars to collect.

Which means that you can check out your favorite blogs – and even if they have already been given the award by someone else – you can still bestow it on them again and help them to reach the maximum 6 stars!

Blog of the Year Award 1 star jpegI think this is such a cool concept because you can be nominated for this award a number of times, and you just change your icon every time you’re nominated again.  And from some of the other blogs that I’ve seen, the bloggers include 7 random facts about themselves.  So … here it goes!

  1. I’m a TV addict! I have a problem and I freely admit it.  I have on average 3 shows every single night of the week that I DVR, and that dZenoraoesn’t include random shows I find just flipping through channels.  Some favorites include: Once Upon a Time, Dexter, True Blood, Walking Dead, Shameless, Pretty Little Liars, Teen Mom, American Horror Story, Nashville, Revenge, Modern Family, Top Chef, Greys Anatomy, and the list goes on and on and on.  I have a problem!
  2. I could eat peanut butter every single day and never get sick of it.  Its my favorite food of all time.
  3. I’m also a travel junkie and really want to travel the world.  I try to take at least 1 big vacation every year and to date I’ve been to over 20 different countries.  Last year it was England, Scotland and Ireland and hopefully this year it will be somewhere in Asia or South America.  I also take about 3 mini vacations a year, somewhere around the US, usually for about 4 or 5 days.
  4. Although I’m addicted to TV, I’m a major book worm.  I love to read and have about 20 books on my bookcase that I still need to read.
  5. I wish I was more stylish :(
  6. My favorite scent in the entire world is Lilac
  7. I’m a huge sports fan! It might not seem like it because I love nails and makeup but I love football just as much as OPI

Some amazing bloggers that deserve this honor as well are!

  • Zenorah! Because she’s one of my best friends that I’ve made on YouTube and blogging
  • Yukie (aka WarmVanillaSugar0823)! Because she was my inspiration to start making videos and to start blogging.  She has worked so hard to get the recognition she rightfully deserves
  • Melissa at HorredousColor and PinkLadyBeauty!  Because she was the first person to ever nominate me for any award ever! And I really think that it was her that gave me the inspiration I needed to continue blogging
  • ThePolishAlcoholic! Because I’m insanely jealous of her nails and she’s the sweetheart that nominated me! (You deserve all 6 stars girl!)
  • Radha at ThePolishOwl! Because she’s my favorite girl on Twitter and Instagram! Her tweets make my day and she knows more about indie nail polish than I ever will!
  • Shannon at Eyemasq! Because I absolutely love her posts about makeup and her knowledge about lipstick! Also, she was one of my first readers (I’m pretty sure) and still comments on almost every post! She’s so sweet!

Thank you all for supporting me and continuing to read throughout the last year!

IMG_5706Have any of you out there ever bought a polish because of the name? Or more specifically, have you ever bought a polish because it was YOUR name? Being named Holly, people ask me all the time if I was born in the winter, or if I was born around Christmas.  When I tell people that I was born in August on the hottest day of the year I was born, people mostly take a step back.  But having a holiday type name, there are normally at least 1 nail polish every single year that is released that is related to holly.  And 9 times out of 10, that holly polish is green! Since my favorite color is green, it would seem like a match made in heaven.  But maybe I’m being too sensitive but I’ve never bought a single polish that had the name Holly attached because I never liked them that much.  They always seemed like bright shimmery greens or like polishes I had in my collection already.  Well, when I saw this  years Holly polish, I was in love!

IMG_5707China Glaze “Winter Holly” is a darker murky forest green microglitter with gold microglitter mixed throughout.  But what I absolutely love about this polish is that it dries matte! It seems like matte glitters are the new trend, as China Glaze has released 2 collections with matte glitters, OPI is releasing the new Liquid Sand finish with the Mariah Carey collection, and Zoya just announced the Pixie Dust collection.  These pictures are without a top coat, so you can see the gritty texture that this polish leaves.  But if you add a top coat, this turns into such a beautiful forest green and gold glitter.

The formula was amazing, just like Champagne Kisses, the other matte glitter I have from China Glaze.  This is 2 coats and completely opaque.  It dries really really quickly and is really easy to deal with. The only negative about this polish is that it does have a gritty texture without a top coat, and you need a few coats of top coat to get it smooth.  But I kind of like it matte, so I’ll deal with the gritty feeling!

What do you guys think? Do any of you have this polish? Do any of you want any of the matte glitters that seem so popular now?
