Battle of the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizers!

When a company releases multiple types of the same product, how do you know which is right for you?  This was the case when I decided that I wanted the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer.  After an exhaustive internet search for the best tinted moisturizer, I decided that the Laura Mercier was the one for me.  All the reviews had claimed that it had a fuller coverage than most tinted moisturizers and there were very few bad reviews, so I went to Sephora and straight to the Laura Mercier section.  I ended up getting the smallest size for the cheapest price, 1 fl oz for $19, and upon check out the cashier informed me that I had enough points for some perks.  If you aren’t aware, Sephora has the Beauty Inside Program, which is basically a free way to get free things and discounts.  You give them your email and some more personal information and every time you check out, they scan your card, and after earning 100 points you can get free products.  The products are sample sizes but it’s a nice way to try out new things.  As fate would have it, my 100 point perk that day was the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer, so I gladly accepted my perk thinking that I just got 50% more product for free.  But this one was different from the one I just purchased and was shocked when I got home and read the label.

The original tinted moisturizer comes in 10 different shades, and at the time of purchase I was in the shade Nude, which is the second to lightest.  I purchased in the beginning of the summer, before I really got any sort of a tan.  A month or so later, this color was way too light for me so I was some what happy that the other one is in a darker color.  The full size retails at $42 but comes in smaller sizes at a cheaper price tag.  This is a very typical tinted moisturizer but like all the reviews said, it does have a slightly better coverage.  I would classify this as a light to medium coverage but it is buildable as well.  I was very impressed with this product, but I had to stop using it because I couldn’t make it work anymore with my skin tone.

When the cashier gave me the sample she did inform me that there was only one shade she could give me, Natural Radiance, but luckily the shade turned out to be exactly the shade of my tan a month or so later.  I was able to play with this product a few times when I noticed that something was definitely different from this tinted moisturizer than the last tinted moisturizer.  This one also only comes in 5 shades rather than 10 for the other tinted moisturizer, but it is the same price.  This one seemed to give my skin a little bit of a shine, almost an oily look and when I looked at the packaging, I saw the word Illuminating and it all made sense.  This one has shimmer in it! I was kind of turned off actually.  I have dry skin and I am always trying to achieve that glowy look, but this made me look straight up oily.  Hopefully these pictures show it better …

The dab on the left is the illuminating one and the one on the right is the normal one.  You can see from this picture that the shades are definitely different, the illuminating is much darker.  But you can also see the shimmer majorly in this picture, especially when it is right next to the original version.

This one also shows the difference in the colors and the shimmer that is in the illuminating one.  The original looks so creamy and dreamy while the other one definitely has some sparkle.  But the only way to really show the difference is by blending …

Hopefully ya’ll will be able to see the difference after these are blended.  I can’t really see the original Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer but the Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer is all shiny and shimmery and I can definitely tell where I blended that.  Heres another picture to try to show the shimmer …

This one you can see where the original was blended, but the illuminating still stands out.  In my personal opinion, this is way to much shimmer for me.  This seriously seems a little intense for your entire face.  I don’t ever have a matte face, but after wearing this for a day I always felt like I looked insanely oily.

I am not a fan of the Laura Mercier Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer, it’s to shiny and I don’t know too many women who want that much shimmer on their face.  There could be some females with insanely dry skin that would love the shimmer in this tinted moisturizer but it’s not for me.  Unless there is a magic powder to take have the shine away and leave the other half and last all day long, I won’t be using this again except for a mixing agent for other foundations.  The original one, I love.  It is just the right amount of coverage and I really need the extra moisturizing now that the weather is getting cooler and my skin is getting drier.  I love the light to medium coverage and it seriously looks like a second layer of perfect skin after I apply it.  Overall, I really like the brand and the effects of the tinted moisturizers from this particular brand.  But with the packaging of the two being virtually identical, someone could easily confuse the two and end up with an oil slick on their face.  Buyer beware and make sure to read labels.
