I was uploading pictures from my computer and found these pictures locked in some odd corner. I completely forgot that I was doing a “Look for Less” style series on here where I compared cheaper polishes that were extremely similar to more expensive polishes. If you want to see the other posts that I did for this series you can check my my Butter London battle with China Glaze, and the Sephora by OPI battle with Sinful Colors. After picking up Barry M “Lilac Foil” in my last trip to the UK, I realized that it was very similar to a polish that I already owned. So I decided to do a side by side comparison to see if they really are that similar on the nail because to me they look almost identical in the bottle. Keep reading to see pictures!
(because maybe you guys didn’t believe me on the names)
(from index to pinky: finger paints, barry m, finger paints, barry m)
As you can tell from the swatches, they aren’t at all dupes. They aren’t even similar. Finger Paints “Silver Sculpture” is a ultra frosty, very soft lilac metallic. Barry M “Lilac Foil” is closer to a lilac color, being a deeper purple and while it is also really frosty, it has a little bit of a silver sheen. Both polishes have a good consistency. Both are opaque in 2 coats and on the thinner side. The only difference in the formula is that the Finger Paints takes much much longer to dry.
Which one wins for me? Neither! If I had to pick between the two, I would pick the Barry M but it isn’t a favorite polish of mine. Actually, it isn’t even one that I grab for. I thought I would like both because I like the molten metal sort of look but both are really frosty and a streaky mess. The Finger Paints polish is much streakier and every single brush stroke is noticeable. The Barry M hides the brush strokes better, but I think its due to the fact that the color is a little darker.
They definitely aren’t dupes and when I think about it, the situation is kind of a catch-22. The Barry M was limited edition and not available in the US. And as far as I know, the Finger Paints isn’t available in stores in the UK. So if you want one of these and live on the unfortunate side of the world, then you’re SOL. But honestly, you can get better polishes and I heard that the Essie lilac metallic polish is amazing!
Price: Finger Paints is $3.99 at Sallys and Barry M is 1.99 (I don’t know the symbol for a British pound)
