Beauty Blogger confession time. I’ve never actually BOUGHT a face primer. I never found the need to wear one on an every day basis so on the occasions where I thought I might need a primer, I would plan ahead, go to Sephora and ask for samples. I’ve sampled almost every high end brand primer that Sephora offers, but I’ve never actually bought one.
In my mind, primer was one of those luxury items that aren’t really “needed” unless you have extremely oily skin and have issues with oxidation or keeping your foundation on. But when I picked up the Laura Geller Balance-n-Brighten Baked Foundation powder, I was a little nervous that I was spending a ton of money on a foundation that wouldn’t last on my skin. Well, as fate (or smart retail planners) would have it, the stand for all of the primers that Ulta sells happened to be about 2 feet away from the Laura Geller display. On a whim, I grabbed the cheapest one in the display and didn’t look back. I’ve now been wearing it almost every day for a month, and finally feel like I can give my honest opinion about the NYX HD Photogenic Primer.

Designed to be paired with our HD Studio Foundation, this silky makeup primer fills in pores, minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and mattifies the complexion for a seamless finish. It also ensures the durability of your makeup, which will last for hours under even the harshest lighting.
You guys know I love pump applicators. I think they are one of the more hygienic types of packaging out there. Also, I found with this pump I get the perfect amount of product. There is nothing more annoying when you have a pump that dispenses way too much product or almost no product at all. With this, just 1 pump and you’re good to go.
The product comes out white. I wasn’t expecting that at all! The product itself is white and even applies white to the face. You have to make sure that you rub it into the skin. How I’ve been using it, is once I apply it to my face I continue to rub it into the skin until I can’t see the white cast anymore.
Ok this photo might seem a little weird until I explain. Ya know how some of those HD Photo primers and powders can leave a white cast or glow to the skin. I know that products like the Makeup Forever HD powder is amazing for video use but once a flash hits your face you literally look like a ghost. If you haven’t seen those pictures, then you can click here! I just did a google image search of “celebrity hd powder pictures”. So I know this isn’t a powder but I was a little worried that it would have the same effect when exposed to a camera flash. I rubbed it over the back of my hand and took a picture with flash, and as you can see, no white cast!
What I Like: I like that this product almost evens out my skin on its own. Because of the color of this product, it camouflages slightly any imperfections I have. The white color evens out my skin tone nicely but after I rub it in, it doesn’t look white or ghostly. I like that this product also spreads out really easily. And unlike other primers there doesn’t seem to be “too much” of this product. Other primers I’ve used, like the Makeup Forever, if you use too much your foundation beads off. This primer doesn’t seem to have that problem. And the best part, this thing keeps my foundation on ALL DAY! Literally, this has kept my foundation on and looking nice for 12-15 hours!
What I don’t like: This isn’t like other primers I’ve used, it isn’t a silicone type primer. So while it does keep my makeup on all day and it slightly evens out my skin, it doesn’t really help my makeup go on smoother. I still see my pores and wrinkles. It does nothing to even out the texture of my skin. Also the smell is a little off-putting. This might sound weird but this smells like plastic and cinnamon. I definitely smell cinnamon on my hands my face after I apply this but there’s a slight plastic-y smell as well.
Overall, its good for the money but it isn’t my favorite. It keeps my makeup on all day and I love that but it doesn’t smooth out the texture of my skin. I’ll definitely keep using it but I don’t know if I’ll repurchase. Its just kind of average and I’m not converted to needing to use a primer in my routine.
