Since school officially ended a few days ago, I’m in major holiday mood! I put up my Christmas tree yesterday, did some Christmas shopping, busted out one of my favorite Christmas nail polishes (lots of posts to come!), and lit some candles with a ton of cinnamon and pine scents. The Christmas music station is on in my car and I’ve already set my DVR to get White Christmas with Bing Crosby tonight.
I’m sorry if this post is offensive to anyone who is of a different faith than me! I know this is a beauty and nail polish blog, but I want to share part of myself with all of you as well. I was tagged to do the Holly Jolly Holiday Tag by Lissa from Lissa’s Polish Addiction and knew I had to do it! If you haven’t checked out Lissa’s blog, its amazing and I’m insanely jealous of her nail shape and the fact that she’s from Australia! I hope that you guys like this and I hope that some of you do this as well!
1. Do you start your Christmas shopping on Black Friday or wait until the last minute?
I normally never ever go shopping on Black Friday! I can’t stand how crowded it is and the lines and the craziness. I went this year because it was my brothers birthday and I had to get him a present. But otherwise, I wait until the last minute. Speaking of which, its 10 days until Christmas Eve and I still have my dad, brother, step mom, step sister, and step brother to do!
2. If you could be in any Christmas movie what would it be?
Christmas Vacation! Just to say the pledge of allegiance at dinner, drink eggnog, do the drum roll for the lights and run from a squirrel.
3. Which do you like better: Christmas Eve or Christmas Day?
Both. That’s one of the things about having divorced parents is that you get 2 celebrations! Christmas Eve with my dad, Christmas Day with my mom.
Christmas Eve is spent with the entire family on my dads side! My dad always throws a HUGE family party with about 20-30 of the immediate family, complete with amazing food and a TON of alcohol. If that’s one thing our family can do is party hard on family get-together’s. We don’t do presents, except for my grandparents, but instead just have a great time with the entire family and I have a huge family!
Christmas Day is spent with my mom! My mom doesn’t really have any family except for a brother who lives in Wisconsin (a ways away from us), so its normally just me, my mom and my brother having coffee and a huge breakfast. My mom always buys a board game for the three of us to play together and then we always go see a movie. Its kind of turned into its own tradition.
4. When does your family put up your Christmas tree and who decorates it?
Since I’m older than some of you who may be reading this, I don’t always get to participate in my family’s tree decorating. My brother’s birthday is December 1st, so we normally get a tree around then. We used to put it up together, but for the last few years my dad has just done it himself since my brother, step brother, step sister and I all don’t live there anymore. I put up my moms tree with her last night though. She wasn’t going to put one up at all this year so I forced her to do it yesterday.
5. White lights or colored lights?
Both! My dad’s tree only has white lights and my moms always has colored lights.
6. Are you guilty of peeking at your presents or do you like the surprise?
I love surprises so I never peeked.
7. Would you rather live in a gingerbread house or in Santa’s Workshop?
Santa’s Workshop. No explanation needed.
8. Tell us your Christmas Eve traditions!
Christmas Eve is always the family party. My dad always throws it and there is always a huge range of food! There’s normally anywhere between 20-30 people there, depending if my cousin can fly in from the west coast, and if my step moms family wants to come over too. I think this year we could hit up to 40 people, all immediate family and significant others (my step sister and cousin are both getting married soon!).
Shrimp cocktail, steak, potatoes, cookies, pie, pretty much any type of food you can think of! I always make a Bailey’s Irish Cream Cheesecake and a Pecan Pie. There is always a ton of wine, Christmas Ale, vodka and baileys to go around. The only presents that get opened are for my grandparents and from my grandparents.
After a ton of drinking, always with Christmas Vacation movie on in the background and the Charlie Brown Christmas CD playing, most of the family goes to midnight mass. My dad is not into religion anymore so that’s when we open presents with my dad, without the rest of the family.
After that, we all go to bed or go over to my moms house to wake up there on Christmas morning.
9. If you could be under the mistletoe with anyone who would it be?
I don’t think I’ve ever seen mistletoe in real life
10. What tops your tree?
Always an angel
11. Can you name the 12 days of Christmas?
Yep! (I think this is the order lol) 12 drummers drumming, 11 pipers piping, 10 lords a leaping, 9 ladies dancing, 8 maids a milking, 7 swans a swimming, 6 geese a laying, 5 GOLDEN RINGS, 4 calling birds, 3 french hens, 2 turtle doves, and a partridge in a pear tree. I didn’t cheat and sorry if I mixed up drummers and pipers.
12. Have you ever gone Christmas caroling?
Yep! I used to every year in downtown in one of the historic buildings, also in a nursing home. I was in choir in middle school and high school and every year we would go caroling as a part of choir class.
13. Do you countdown to Christmas? If so, how many days are left?
No, its more of “Oh Shit! There’s only 9 shopping days left!”
14. What are some foods and treats you can count on having every holiday season?
I always make a Bailey’s Irish Cream Cheesecake. Since I’m gluten intolerant, if I want some sort of dessert I have to make it. My mom has started making all her cookies with rice flour instead of regular flour, so I have those as well. I also love making pumpkin and pecan pie. Aside from that, every Christmas Eve we have filet mignon, cocktail shrimp, and potatoes. Every Christmas Morning we have eggs and bacon. Can you tell I love food!?!
15. How has Christmas kept its magic for you as you’ve grown older?
Its all about family so the magic never really goes away. Christmas is a time for family, love and giving. It isn’t about the presents or the food. The feeling of this time of year is something that never fails to give me the warm and fuzzy feeling inside.
So that’s the Holly Jolly Holiday Tag! I hope you all enjoyed this! If you want to do this, then please feel free to do so! Some people that I tag are:
Happy Holidays! I hope you all have a great time with friends and family during this time of the year! Regardless of what you celebrate this is the best time of the year to be with those you love!
