Cult Classics!? Loreal Voluminous Carbon Black Mascara Review!

cult_classics_logo2Welcome to my next edition of ” Cult Classics!?”  “Cult Classic” products, in my eyes, are products that are reached this higher level of hype either online or in real life.  Everyone knows those products that everyone and their sister seems to rave about.  I bet you can think of a few of those products right now,  that have been around for a while and girls have repeatedly purchased or have labeled them as “holy grail” products.

In this series, I’m testing out these products that everyone seems to rave about and see if they really live up to the hype! I want to find out for myself, and for you guys, if they really deserve the “Cult Classic” title.  Up next … Loreal Carbon Black Mascara!

IMG_7434I swear I hear about this mascara more than any other mascara in history of makeup.   I had always wanted it but would always get swept up in all of the new mascaras that blogs and YouTubers would rave about.  So how does this mascara measure up? Should it be considered a “Cult Classic”?

IMG_7435Keep reading to see this on my lashes and to find out if it’s worth all the hype!

The packaging and the wand are both very generic.  There isn’t anything special to report about either.  It is your standard regular bristle brush and there are no bells and whistles with the tube.  Sometimes its nice to have something so simple because I think a lot of the time companies waste a lot of money on the packaging.   The formula is a little bit of a wetter formula to start with but it dries pretty quickly.

IMG_7399What I like:  I like the packaging and the wand.  I really like that it doesn’t clump my lashes that badly.  Sometimes with formulas that are on the wet side I get major clumping and I haven’t experienced any with this mascara.  I’ve been using this now for about a month and it is now drier and now gives me the million lashes look! I think this mascara gets better as it gets older, the more it dries out.

What I don’t like:  Although I like it better when it is dry, I’ve been using this for just over a month and its almost completely dried out! I almost have to throw it out.   My biggest complaint is that this mascara smudges soooooo bad! Within an a few hours after application I see little black smudges above my crease and at the corners of my eye.  I really can’t stand that.  And the last gripe I have with this mascara isn’t really the mascara, but all the hype that people give it.  I’ve heard from countless people that this mascara is the blackest mascara on the market.  After trying it, it just seems sort of average and no different than every other black colored mascara.

Overall, it is alright.  Not the best mascara I’ve ever used and definitely not the worst.  The smudging is really what makes me give this a less than glowing review because I RARELY experience smudging with any mascara.  In fact, I can only think of one other mascara that ever smudged this bad on me.  I really like this for a layering mascara but I don’t know if I will ever purchase it again.  I think that I can find mascaras that do the same thing but don’t smudge as bad on my eyes.

Final Verdict:  Sorry to say this to all you Carbon Black lovers but this doesn’t live up to all the hype!   Not that its a bad mascara, it just isn’t for me.  It has its high points but I think there are much better ones at the drugstore.

What do you guys think? What are your Cult Classic products?

  1. I must admit I’ve never been intrigued by this just because I didn’t think it had much of a selling point. A Cult Classic I’ve also never understood is the Dior Show mascara does almost the same thing you are describing in this post. Really enjoyed reading this, can’t wait for the next instalment 🙂

  2. Oh i think i’ve been using up 10 of the L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Volume Building Mascara in the past, it was def my go-to mascara for a very long time. I think the Carbon Black came out somewhat later. But i stayed with the one i liked.
At some point cheaper brands got their mascaras on the market and could be compaired with L’Oreal, so i stopped buying it.

    • i used to use that mascara too! but i’ve never been one to stick with a mascara, i’ve always switched it up. i can count on 1 hand how many mascaras i’ve actually bought more than 2 tubes of. thanks for reading and commenting girl!
